Accreditation Process

Decisions concerning the accreditation of programmes of learning are made by the member institutions of the JBM that are licensed to act on behalf of the Engineering Council. Such decisions are based on the recommendations made by the JBM. These are based on judgements made by the JBM concerning the compliance of the programmes of learning with the JBM Guidelines for Developing Degree and Further Learning Programmes. The JBM now offer pre-visit presentations for Universities at least six months before a visit to provide them with more information about the visit and accreditation process and give institutions the opportunity to air any concerns they may have or simply to have an informal chat to members of the JBM and Visiting Team.

Visits

The structure of each visit also follows a standard format.  As well as assessing the quality of the facilities, the content of the syllabus, the teaching and research base, the rigour of the examinations, and the output standards, moderators assess whether the educational establishment aims to stimulate able minds to lifelong learning, creativity and the art of engineering. It involves a tour of laboratories and facilities, scrutiny of the quality of students' examination and coursework and the assessment system. Discussions are held with academic staff, support staff, students and the Vice Chancellor/Principal, or Chief Executive, on all matters affecting the content, standard of teaching and learning, facilities and funding issues relating to the programmes being accredited.

Each Team's visit report and recommendations are considered by the full Board of the JBM, which in turn makes recommendations to the JBM member institutions about granting or renewing accreditation for a period of up to five years. If the programme is deemed unsatisfactory, the Board may impose conditions, refuse or even terminate accreditation; but existing students on accredited programmes are always protected from any changes in accreditation decisions. The Board may request specific actions within a certain timescale eg. programme changes, a plan for development.

The Board will also consider paper submissions for new programmes or for changes to existing accredited programmes. Any programmes approved by paper submission will be monitored and re-examined at the next formal accreditation visit.

The Board will advise educational establishments of their right to a review of a decision if a request for accreditation of a particular programme is rejected. A review shall be approved if there is evidence of administrative, procedural or other irregularities in the conduct of the visit, or the meeting of the Board at which the decision was taken; or where information has become available which would influence the decision and which was not, and could not have been, available at the time of the visit.
